Problems with the senses (vision, hearing, touch, taste and smell) are a common and upsetting aspect of autism. Despite this, research into why sensory issues occur has been limited.
We are currently looking for volunteers with a formal diagnosis of an autism spectrum condition:
•aged between 18-50
•no history of visual disorder
•speak English as a first language
If you decide you would like to take part you will be asked to visit the University of Manchester for two separate sessions.
In the first session you will be asked to participate in a series of tasks related to your diagnosis of autism. This part of the experiment will be video recorded by the researcher. You will also be asked to complete an intelligence test. This task is included to match participants with ASC and the control group. You will be asked to complete two short questionnaires about some of your daily experiences.
In the second session you will be asked to complete an experimental task where you will respond to short, painless vibrations, beeps and light flashes. We will record your responses via a foot pedal or they will be spoken aloud. During the task you will listen to white noise (a buzzing/crackling sound) to mask the sound from the vibrations.
The first session will take up to 2 hours to complete and the second session will take 45 minutes to complete.
Participants will receive financial compensation for their time and we will cover the cost of any reasonable travel expenses.
